The Maguire Castle, Enniskillen, County Fermanagh

We take a look inside the Maguire Castle in Enniskillen, County Fermanagh.

We headed up to the Enniskillen Castle Museums in County Fermanagh. It’s a fascinating location – bang in the centre of Enniskillen and housed in what was the original Maguire Castle of the area. We caught up with Frank Roofe and asked him to tell us more about what was left of the original Maguire Castle. Over to Frank and Carina:

Our trip to the museum was part of a wider homelands feature on County Fermanagh (which you can see here) and we were delighted with the quality of the exhibitions – and more importantly the enthusiasm and knowledge of the friendly guides such as Frank Roofe.

Well worth a visit – especially if your Irish ancestors came from the area or if they served in the military anytime from the 1700s onwards.

Slán for now, Mike & Carina.

Boat Trip to Devenish Island, County Fermanagh

We headed for Devenish island – an early christian monastic site that is conveniently located just outside the town of Enniskillen in County Fermanagh.

We were in the company of Barry Flanagan of Erne Water Taxi. It was just a short boat-ride from Enniskillen Castle and Barry provided plenty of commentary along the way.

Join us now on the journey to Devenish Island:

Once we arrived on the island, Barry led us first to the Round Tower. As he held a key, Carina and himself made their way inside and Barry told us a more about these unique Irish landscape features:

The celtic high crosses that you find around Ireland provide us with a visceral connection with a not-so-distant celtic past. Here Barry tells us more about this special cross located on the island:

We then went on to view more of the monastic features on the island:

What a great trip – and all covered in a single morning!

Well worth the “voyage” if you ever get to that beautiful part of Lough Erne and the town of Enniskillen in County Fermanagh.
