Using Ancestry.com for Irish Ancestry Research

COURSE OVERVIEW:

In this training we examine the best approach, benefits and pitfalls of using Ancestry.com for Irish ancestry research. We use a branch of Mike’s own Irish family tree to observe and comment as we progress through the training – he then uses different views and tools available inside Ancestry.com to carry out recommendations (note: about 90% of Green Room members are, or have been, members of Ancestry.com).

Throughout this practical, actionable course, you’ll:

  • See how you can use both the Green Room Research Road Map and ancestry.com as tools for your Irish ancestry research.
  • Learn how to build robust and reliable trees inside Ancestry.com for your Irish ancestors.
  • See Mike deal with red herrings and obstructions along the way as he uses ancestry.com to research a line of his Irish ancestry.
  • Get hints and tips from our US-based genealogist on gathering “ancestor identifiers” before making the leap back to the Irish records.
  • Learn which Irish record sets are available from inside ancestry.com – and when you need to leave ancestry.com to dig deeper into those and other records.
  • Receive hints and tips from our Ireland-based genealogist on searching Irish record sets from within ancestry.com
  • Learn where you can receive your further help and advice on using ancestry.com inside the Green Room.

As Mike progresses with the case-study in this course, he calls on Pam Holland (our US-based genealogist) and Jayne McGarvey (our Ireland-based genealogist) for feedback and advice. They provide plenty of pointers – and he then applies their advice. Just like a Green Room member would in real-life!

This course illustrates THE fundamental approach and principles for researching your Irish ancestors from within ancestry.com.

Green Room Research Roadmap.

This roadmap will help guide your Green Room research for one particular individual (or couple) in your Irish family tree. The roadmap is divided into 4 stages – and each stage is subsequently divided into a number of lessons with attached worksheets.

You are under no obligation to start at Stage 1 and continue until you reach the end of Stage 4 – but we recommend that you take this approach the first time you use the roadmap. As you make your way through each lesson inside each of the four stages – remember that there is an Irish family history genealogist on hand to help you with any questions you may have along the way. You will see a link to genealogist help inside each stage of the roadmap.

(Note: What do you think of our new Green Room Research Roadmap? When you are ready, we'd love your first thoughts here....)

Case Study: Compiling an Accurate and Useful Irish Family History

In this workshop, Jayne McGarvey (our Irish-based Green Room Genealogist) works through typical issues that we all face when compiling an accurate and useful Irish Family History.

She uses the example of a single member’s family history (with her permission) to show how easy it is to jump to conclusions too early on in your family search – and then pieces together an appropriate approach to compiling an accurate and useful Irish family history – with lots of hints and “watchouts” along the way.

Important notes:

Note 1: This case study was is first presented at this location in The Green Room forum so that members can offer comment, input, insight and ask questions as we went along. We will refer you back to that part of the forum from time to time as we move through this case-study so you can examine earlier comments from Green Room members as well as offer some comments and questions yourself.

Note 2: This is a “case-study”, so it focuses on the issues surround just one of our Green Room members. HOWEVER, we believe that many of the difficulties she faced in her research are shared by most of our members – and Jayne’s suggestions on a more robust approach to research are applicable to all.

Note 3: This is a “warts-and-all” case-study – it aims to put you inside the mind of a professional genealogist as she tries to make sense of one particular person’s situation – and suggest ways forward. We resisted “polishing” the results too much!

Training: Irish Ancestry DNA Testing – YDNA

COURSE OVERVIEW:

In this training, we look at DNA Testing for Irish Ancestry Purposes. We specifically look at Y-DNA testing – this is the test that is taken by Males-only and therefore is useful for surname research specifically (which mostly passes through the male line). We sponsored one of our Green Room members to take the Y-DNA test – and then we combined the results with associated record research to produce this training.

Training: How To Use Ancestry Tools At Johngrenham.com

COURSE OVERVIEW:

In this training, we look at a great way to extend your DNA comparison database in a very useful (and free) manner using the GEDMatch.com service. Many of our Green Room Members already use this service, so I want to use this training to trigger your questions, discoveries and comments whether you are an old hand with this service OR just coming across it for the first time.

NOTE: Since I originally published this training in February, 2016 – many good things have happened:

  1. John Grenham ended his association with The Irish Times and moved his website location. We then we came to an arrangement with John that all Green Room members would have full free access to his site while they remained Green Room members.
  2. To claim your free membership of what is now called JohnGrenham.com – just go here and follow the instructions
  3. Finally, I have just changed the references in a minimal manner below – but will add more substantive changes over the coming weeks and months.
